Funding
BioSysteM is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) under Germany’s Excellence Strategy (EXC3092/1-533751719), funding period: 2026–2032.
It comprises two of Germany’s most successful universities, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), as well as the international renowned partner institutions Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Helmholtz Munich and Deutsches Museum.

Structure
BioSysteM is organized in Research Areas, Research Themes, and mission-driven M-Projects reflecting our three basic questions: Why do we want to design biosystems? How can we achieve biosystems design? Can we tailor biosystems for specific applications?
MORE SOONGovernance
All BioSysteM PIs are actively engaged in the BioSysteM General Assembly to contribute to the cluster´s development. The Executive Board is composed of the three spokespersons, four representatives of the research areas, one representative for gender and diversity, and two representatives for early career researchers (TUM and LMU), and the spokesperson of the Graduate Board. The Executive Board will be supported by an Administration Office and assisted by an Advisory Board.
